Healthy Eyesight Starts Here
The world is an exciting place when your child’s visual centres are developing. Their eyes make many discoveries in the first years: colours shine a little brighter, and new visual wonders await around every corner. We’re lucky to experience this new world with them.
To ensure your child’s vision develops well, it requires special and diligent care. Kids grow up quickly, and their eyes grow with them. It’s essential to be aware of the important developmental milestones your child must reach while their eyes grow.
Toronto Centre Eye Care is ready to help with your child’s visual development. If you have questions about their eyesight or would like to book an exam, contact us today.
When Should My Child Have Their First Eye Exam?
The Canadian Association of Optometrists (CAO) recommends that your child have their first eye exam between 6 and 9 months.
Our optometrists ensure your child’s eyesight is developing correctly and look for any concerns with their visual health. Once we know a little more about your baby’s eyes, we can suggest the frequency of future appointments.
Toddlers
Toddlers can be a little wild and for pretty exciting reasons! At this age, they’re very interested in exploring their surroundings using their developing hearing and vision centres.
Parents looking to help hone their toddler’s visual skills can do the following activities:
- Roll a ball back and forth to help sharpen visual tracking
- Use building blocks or locking toys of all shapes, colours, and sizes to help develop fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination
- Read to them or tell them stories to aid with visualization skills
In a toddler’s eye exam, we check for overall eye health concerns, including myopia (nearsightedness) and hyperopia (farsightedness).
Your child’s hand-eye coordination, eye tracking, depth perception, and colour vision are thoroughly assessed, and we will provide detailed descriptions of our findings.
Preschoolers
Children between the ages of 3 and 5 should undergo at least one comprehensive eye exam. Your eye doctor will ensure your child’s eyes are developing correctly and search for any early signs of eye disease or eye conditions.
Children in this age group learn the necessary skills that prepare them for their school years. Parents can aid visual development by engaging in a few of these activities with their children:
- Playing memory games
- Cutting and pasting
- Throwing and catching
- Reading aloud and showing the words on the page
- Providing art supplies like chalk, finger paints, or crayons
- Offering building blocks or puzzles
School-Age Children
Providing school-age children with additional support and care can help ensure academic success and happiness in their school years. Regular eye exams help prevent vision issues from affecting your young scholars’ love of learning.
Studies show that untreated vision issues can be similar to attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Our experienced and compassionate eye care professionals can help avoid misdiagnosis, reducing stress and strain for your child in these critical years.
Symptoms of a vision problem in a school-aged child could include:
- Complaints of eye discomfort
- Complaints of eye fatigue
- Complaints of headaches
- Frequent eye rubbing
- Excessive blinking
- A short attention span
- Avoiding reading
- Consistently covering one eye
- Holding reading materials close to the face
- Losing place when reading
At Toronto Centre Eye Care, we use top-rated diagnostic technologies during every eye exam to help catch vision problems in the earliest stages of development. Working together, we can help your children see better.
