Relief for Digital Eye Strain
There’s no denying it: the world has gone digital, and we spend more time on our screens than ever before. Our society relies heavily on technology, and although convenient, all that digital screen time can lead to strained eyes.
If your eyes become tired and sore after extended screen use, it may cause a condition called digital eye strain. At Toronto Centre Eye Care, we offer various ways to help you reduce digital eye strain. We have the relief you’re seeking for tired, weary eyes!
What Causes Digital Eye Strain?
When you focus on a task or object for a prolonged period, like driving long distances or reading too long without taking a break, you can develop eye strain.
Digital eye strain can occur after working on a digital screen for over 2 consecutive hours. This condition is also called computer vision syndrome.
Symptoms of digital eye strain can include:
- Irritated eyes
- Red eyes
- Pink eyes
- Watery eyes
- Headaches
- Sore neck and shoulders
How to Prevent Digital Eye Strain
We’ve put together a few tips to help our patients find relief from their digital eye strain.
Tips & Tricks
Here are some helpful hints to manage your symptoms:
- Yoga time! Take many quick stretch breaks
- Adjust lighting levels in the room where you’re working
- Reduce glare on your monitor
- Adjust your monitor height to help alleviate stress on the neck and shoulders
- Bat those lashes! Blink frequently to hydrate your eyes
The 20-20-20 Rule
Research suggests the 20-20-20 rule can be an effective short-term method to help relieve symptoms of digital eye strain: every 20 minutes, look at an object approximately 20 feet away for about 20 seconds. Regular breaks may help your eyes rest before getting back to the grind.
Eye Drops
Before purchasing over-the-counter eye drops, we recommend speaking to the team at Toronto Centre Eye Care. Eye drops may act as a quick fix to rehydrate your dry and tired eyes, but certain ingredients are unsuitable for some prescriptions.
Find Your Relief
The good news is that digital eye strain has no long-term consequences for your vision, and a few simple adjustments to your digital habits may help provide the relief you need.
It’s essential to note that there are other eye conditions with similar symptoms to digital eye strain.
If you follow our tips and don’t notice a significant difference in your symptoms, call us to book an eye exam. We’ll work together to figure out the cause of your discomfort and provide appropriate recommendations.
