Keep Your Child’s Visual Health in Focus
Myopia (often referred to as nearsightedness) is a refractive error, resulting in closer objects appearing sharp and clear, while distant objects appear out-of-focus.
Myopia has become more common in children, and at Toronto Centre Eye Care, we’re dedicated to slowing this condition’s progression by providing individualized management options for every patient.
If you’re concerned about your child’s visual health, reach out to our team today.
What Causes Myopia?
Experts haven’t determined the exact cause of myopia, although research suggests a combination of individual lifestyle and genetics.
If the eye grows longer than average or the cornea becomes too steeply curved, it can result in myopia. This condition affects how light reaches the retina.
How Does Myopia Affect Your Child?
As your children grow, their eyes grow with them. Myopia generally develops between ages 6 and 12 and worsens until adulthood, when the eyes stop growing.
Children with myopia have a higher risk of developing vision problems like glaucoma, cataracts, and retinal tears. Our experienced optometrists can provide guidance to help control myopia.
Symptoms of myopia can include:
- Persistently squinting
- Needing to sit closer to the screen or at the front of a classroom
- Seeming unaware of distant objects
- Blinking excessively
- Rubbing eyes constantly
Myopia Management
Toronto Centre Eye Care offers various management options to help control myopia in our young patients.
Atropine Eye Drops
Low-dose atropine drops can be a helpful method in slowing myopia progression. Experts have determined that this method works while the child’s eyes are still growing.
Peripheral Defocus Contact Lenses
Peripheral defocus contact lenses are multifocal contact lenses made with different rings of peripheral defocus. The centre part of the lens provides clear distance vision, while the surrounding rings blur the peripheral.
Experts suggest that blurring peripheral vision helps slow the growth of children’s eyes, thereby slowing the progression of myopia.
Hoya MiyoSmart Optical Lenses
